5 of the Most Popular Interior Design Trends of 2020 (And How to Use Them)
Now that the holidays are approaching, more and more people are looking to spruce up their homes. As with any field, interior design is always changing; embracing new trends and letting go of many more as the years go on. This ebb and flow makes my job all the more fun and interesting, but can sometimes leave homeowners a little overwhelmed. So in an effort to spread the love, I’ve put together 5 of the biggest and most popular trends you’ve been seeing out there, along with a few suggestions of how to incorporate them into your own spaces!
Mix of Warm & Cool
In a world that has fully embraced neutral designs, whites and grays definitely reign supreme. These colors have been the go-to for those looking to create a simple and cohesive look in their homes. Only problem? Clients often say it feels cold or stark. By mixing your cool walls or furniture with plenty of warm colors and materials, it brings balance to the space.
This dining room uses a white table and rug mixed with and blue-black buffet and artwork for their cool tones. These are offset by the warm wood chairs and brass hardware. Using this technique is a stylish and easy way to bring your space that added warmth you are searching for.
Natural Woods & Finishes
For a long time, wood trim, cabinets and furniture were all being painted. But these days more and more designs are embracing natural woods. Rustic or worn finishes are popping up everywhere, and a beautiful piece of wood furniture brings character to any room. Wider plank flooring is also making a big come back, as seen in this kitchen by Comfort and Peasant.
Bold, Bright Patterns
Wallpaper has made a tremendous comeback and I strongly believe that it is here to stay for a while. We are seeing a complete and total embrace of bold, fun and lively patterns, particularly in powder rooms. Another great way to mix in some prints and patterns is through accent pillows, rugs, and on the walls with some fun graphic artwork.
Dark, Moody Tones
A dark color palette like the one used in this stunning office space by Studio McGee is definitely on trend this year. Bold, moody hues like charcoal and deep blues and greens create drama. The beautiful paint color in this space is “Green Black” by Sherwin Williams. Designer Shea McGee wrapped this color all around the room by carrying it up onto the ceiling and the built ins. The result is a cozy, sophisticated space perfectly balanced with light textiles, a bright striped rug, and this amazing coffee table.
Embracing Old & New
One of the trends I am most excited about (and am hopeful it is here to stay) is mixing more new and old pieces. For so long, people were shopping for perfect, out of the box design. While that method did and can create beautifully coordinated spaces, they lack the personality that separates good and great design. This year, there is a total embrace of collecting, curating and displaying found objects. These paired alongside new and even repurposed pieces create a lived in, more relaxed space.
