How To's

No Tree? No Problem. Affordable Small Space Solutions for Your Holiday Decor

December 3, 2020

For many of us, decking the halls for the holidays provides immense joy. The twinkling lights, scent of pine and sugar cookies in the air, classic holiday music on the radio…it’s all incredibly nostalgic. The reality is, not everyone has an enormous decoration budget (or home). So with that in mind, we pulled together some our favorite *affordable* small space solutions for your holiday decor this season.

Garland, Everywhere

Garland instantly provides holiday spirit and can be very affordable! Whether you choose the real stuff or a long term faux option, hanging a swag of garland over a door, shelf or fireplace is a simple but impactful solution. Leave natural like Grace did here in her Chicago studio apartment, or string with lights for more ambiance.

Use A Shelf For A Mantle

I would argue that a vast majority of home overs do not have a fireplace in their homes. Good news is, Santa still shows up in those homes every year! An easy and inventive way to create a fireplace mantle for all your stockings is to use a shelf, like the one here by The Golden Sycamore. Adding some twinkling lights, stockings and candles make this an adorable festive focal point.

DIY Wreaths

Come tour my Nordic Christmas home. Fresh greens, candles and texutre galore: It's dressed to the nines for the Holiday season.

Wreaths add an easy and festive touch to any room. Try hanging them in places other than the front door, like this example from Erin Francois. These DIY wreaths only require some ribbon, hot glue, wire, and patience. You can create them with greenery, or incorporate some fun ornaments, berries and pine cones. For those less interested in doing it themselves, wreaths of all sizes are available at your local garden center. Should you choose the faux route, places like Target and HomeGoods are another great resource.

Decorative Greenery and Branches

In homes with no room for a proper tree, adding fresh branches and smaller greenery is a great way to get the same seasonal feel. This cozy kitchen by The Identite Collective sprinkles in just a few simple elements like the mini tree wrapped in burlap, sweet wreath over the range, and leather wrapped vase with fresh branches to create a simple festive space.

We hope no matter the size of your home, you are comfortable and safe at home this holiday season.

xx Kelly
