The Top Design Trends of 2021

December 30, 2020

Can you believe it? We have finally arrived in the year 2021. After a yearly largely spent at home, now more than ever we at The Reverie Home understand the importance of creating a space you truly love and enjoy. Time spent at home both living and working allowed many of us to see our homes with fresh eyes. So as we move into a new year, we wanted to highlight the few stand-out design trends that we will surely be seeing this year in the interior design space.

Trend 1: A Nod to the Traditional

In many ways, this trend isn’t “new” at all. Design styles and accessories from the past are making a strong return. These nods to the past provide a sense of familiarity and comfort in the home. This year we will see more antiques, traditional furnishings and fabrics, and ornate detailing mixed with more modern colors and finishes. We certainly saw this trend making a strong resurgence in 2020, and fully expect it to continue throughout the coming year.

Trend 2: Natural and Sustainable Materials

This year, we will see an increased and continued use of natural and sustainable materials. Natural stones, reclaimed woods, plasters, and repurposed furniture not only add character to a space, but help to tread lightly on our planet. Similar to the clothing industry, there are many ways that the design world can and should improve when it comes to sustainability. Thankfully, more and more homeowners and designers are making the conscious choices when it comes to materials and finishes. This is a trend we can fully get behind in 2021!

Trend 3: Colors of the Year

Not that we put much stock into the color selections of the year, but we thought it was worth mentioning! For 2021, Pantone has selected two colors of the year; Ultimate Gray, a warm neutral tone, and Illuminating, a vibrant yellow. The two are meant to be paired together to represent practicality (gray) and optimism (yellow). Over at Benjamin Moore, they have crowned Aegean Teal as their color of the year. For us, this choice is the easier of the two to get behind, and are excited to see how people use it in 2021.

Trend 4: Handcrafted Materials

Taking the use of natural and sustainable materials one step further is the implementation of handmade products like tile and furniture pieces. The same pushback that fast fashion has received is finding its way into home design, and artisan works are being highlighted and revered. The largest example of this trend we’ve seen is the use of handmade, irregular tiles for bathrooms and backsplashes. This more lived-in and rustic look and feel is a thing of beauty in 2021.

Trend 5: Green, Everywhere!

Indoor plantings, cabinetry colors, textiles. We mean it, green will be everywhere this year, and for good reason. Green as we all know is the mixture of blue and yellow, meaning it works great in both warm and cool toned spaces. Deep, forest green hues are a wonderful way to add drama and interest in any room. Green is also representative of new beginnings and growth, something we all are looking forward to in the year to come.

Trend 6: Closed Floor Plans

For years, having an open concept floor plan was the pinnacle. But, after living and working at home for a year with kids and all that comes with it, we are seeing a resurgence of separated rooms and closed floor plans. Creating distinguished spaces adds intimacy, privacy, and the opportunity to give each room a unique personality again. This is something that has not be achievable in the open concept floor plans of the past few years. As the ways we use our homes continue to evolve and shift, we are sure to see more structural additions and changes like these made to fit the demand.

What is your favorite trend heading into the new year? Are there any listed above you are eager to try? Or better yet, any that haven’t made this list? Let us know in the comments.

Until next time,

xx Kelly
